More Parking for Sheraton02/06/2007 : ConnectionMore Parking for Sheraton Reston Planning and Zoning Committee recommended approval of JBG Companies request to replace 165 surface parking spaces behind Reston Sheraton Hotel with a garage containing 309 spaces. The proposal would allow development of an approved retail building where a parking lot in front of the Sheraton stands today. According to Jeff Kelley, JBG project manager, construction schedule of the three-level garage — most of it below grade — would depend on the market conditions. When the company decides it is prudent to develop the planned retail building, it would have to offset the parking lost in its place and due to its construction. The garage would serve Sheraton guests exclusively and its visible parts would be screened with vegetation, according to Kelley. “It is my understanding that [Fairfax County’s] Planning Department has no problem with this parking garage, and neither do I,” said Arthur Hill, vice chairman of the Reston P&Z, Frank de la Fé, Hunter Mill District planning commissioner, said any issues with this proposal would be considered in the design review process. Hill said JBG had invested a good amount of resources into improving Sheraton’s liveliness as a business, creating newfound interest in the hotel’s conference rooms. “Improvements have been made, the space is needed,” said Hill about his endorsement of the garage proposal. Reston P&Z Chairman David Vanell also endorsed the proposal, but advised JBG representatives at Monday night’s meeting of future problems in regards to the development’s impact on nearby roads. “Traffic on Sunrise Valley will be a problem. It already is a problem,” said Vanell. |
